Social Responsibility
How we positively impact our communities through social responsibility projects.
Mongena’s community footprint
The owners and staff of Mongena Private Game Reserve are proud to be heavily involved in social responsibility through the upliftment of the communities within and around the Dinokeng Game Reserve and greater Hammanskraal area. Our footprint includes a legacy of social responsibility initiatives that span more than a decade. Moondance community programme 2023
Little Mongena Tented Camp, in collaboration with Mongena Game Lodge, hosted nine groups of American scholars as part of the June/July 2023 Moon Dance outreach program. Moon Dance, an adventure travel company for teens, promotes impactful adventures beyond comfort zones, allowing teens to disconnect from social media, discover themselves, and develop empathy. During June/July 2023, students spent 36 days engaging with the community, interacting with children and the elderly. Mongena organized social projects with local leaders, renovating five nursery schools and two old age homes, as well as refurbishing three community houses (one completely rebuilt). The program's success has paved the way for another in 2024.
Mandela Day Celebrations 18 July 2023
Mandela Day is celebrated annually throughout the country to commemorate the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela and his vision of Ubuntu. Mongena Private Game Reserve in conjunction with the community block leaders of Ward 78 and the Dinokeng Game Reserve Community Trust members in the neighbouring township, Kekana Gardens took this year the initiative and arranged a divine luncheon for the pensioners of Kekana Gardens with a blanket handout thereafter to the elderly. The Ward Councellor and representatives of the Gauteng Government who are the patrons of the Dinokeng Game Reserve Project, were in attendance to celebrate this special day with the Owners Etienne and Marina Toerien of Mongena Private Game Lodge.
Lessons in Conservation (LiC)
Mongena Game Lodge has been actively involved with Lessons in Conservation (LiC), a non-profit company, since its inception in 2018. LiC strives to educate children, especially in rural areas, about the importance of conserving nature and teaching them about the importance of conservation. This is done in the form of specially structured and interactive lessons taught to children by the LiC members. These lessons and learnings are then solidified and enhanced in the form of a practical excursion. The children are brought to Mongena where we facilitate complimentary game drives for them, to create a connection between nature and their lessons.
